The Broad Museum

The Broad Museum is opened a month ago in downtown Los Angeles right next to the Gehry’s Walt Disney Concert Hall. Architects of the Boston Institute of Contemporary Art and Highline of New York, Diller Scofidio + Renfro designed and completed their third landmark building in the United States. Broad Museum is probably the most exciting building I have ever seen in Los Angeles since my first visit to Bonaventura Hotel. Its circulation and internal organisation is interesting despite tiny flaws. The Lecture room’s glazing is penetrated by the facade of the building.   The relationstip between the art (Jeffrey Koons’ sculpture on left) and the exhibition space is not as succesful as expected. Meandering around the exhibition space, one can come across an emergency door right next to a painting which could easily be resolved in a different way with more care. The ceilings are beautiful – reminding me the ceilings of Barbican Center in London. The continuation of the facade as ceiling also gives a sense of locating self within the levels of the building.   Elevator Shaft   Interior Corner   Exterior Dissapointing disconnection of the exterior of the building with bulge extending into the building. The most spectacular, surpising instance in the building stays as an visual effect by the physical disconnection when you look closer to the facade.
